Congenital x-linked retinoschisis: a novel approach for management of a large schitic cavity overhanging the macula.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel surgical technique used in the management of a patient with congenital X-linked juvenile retinoschisis who presented with a schitic cavity overhanging the macula.

METHODS: The patient underwent controlled external fluid drainage and laser photocoagulation along with intravitreal gas injection.

RESULTS: No intraoperative complication was noted. Postoperatively, the schitic cavity collapsed, the overhang resolved, and visual acuity improved.

CONCLUSION: External drainage is a promising novel technique for the management of patients with congenital X-linked juvenile retinoschisis who have peripheral retinoschisis overhanging the macula.
