Axillary artery insertion of an intraaortic balloon pump.

We describe a technique for insertion of an intraaortic balloon pump through the axillary artery. This approach is useful in patients requiring intraaortic balloon pump support before cardiac transplantation in that it dramatically increases patient mobility while awaiting a donor heart.
