Cardiac pacing.
Pacemaker technology has become much more complex in the last ten years. Transcutaneous pacemakers now allow rapid institution of cardiac pacing in the Emergency Department and in the prehospital setting. Permanent pacemakers frequently have dual-chamber pacing and sensing capability as well as multiple programmable modes of operation. Traditional emergency pacing techniques, including transvenous emergency pacing, can now be used more selectively.
